Timeline: Mid AM
Time on Road: Estimate 90-120 minute drive
Congestion: minimal congestion. There was minimal traffic on the road at this time period on a Saturday morning.
Slow Downs: No stop lights or stop signs
Weather Conditions: mid 70s, cloudy, mild humidity. 5-10 minutes of rain.
Scenery: Lots of overlooks of the mountains where you can see down in the valley below. Also the road tracks along side rocks and mountains where the trees and canopy tower over the road. A stream follows a good portion of the road where people fish and water raft.
Visibility: For most times of the road you can see the road and obstacles ahead.
Difficulty: Good roadway with some 90 degree curved turns, road turns, slopes and a few zig/zag areas. Not very difficult even at high speed. Road is generally flat and well kept. No pot holes or damaged asphalt.
Pictures: There are companies setup on this road that take pictures of people driving and sell them online. Pictures are HD.
Thoughts: C/H is a good drive for pushing your performance vehicle or cruising. For the most part you can see far ahead of you so there are few times when what is around the corner is uncertain. In my opinion the Cherohala Skyway provided a better experience due to the lower congestion and higher speeds that could be attained on the Tail of the Dragon. The road condition allowed for viewing of more scenery than the Tail of the Dragon. With the tail you can’t really look away from the road for a moment. Overall both roads were great and plan on riding them again in the fall. Highly recommended for people with any vehicle type.
We pulled over with the Georgia Regional Mustang Club at Turkey Overlook, great backdrop for group shots with the Mustangs!
